Compost Commons is a free bi-weekly program where people of all ages and backgrounds are invited to learn about composting together, ask questions, and share resources. Hosted by Karuna Compost, the program emphasizes hands-on learning, peer exchange, and practical support for home and community composting.
Each gathering offers a flexible mix of activities that respond to participants’ interests, seasonal conditions, and available materials. Attendees are welcome to drop in briefly or stay for the full session.
What to expect when you come to a meetup:
Backyard composting & worm bin support
One-on-one and small-group guidance on compost systems, troubleshooting, and maintenance, including vermicomposting and small-scale outdoor piles.
Compost kits & materials exchange
Collection, distribution, and occasional assembly of home composting kits and related materials (e.g., worm bins, bedding, tools, educational handouts). Participants may also share surplus materials or resources.
Microscopy & soil life exploration
Informal microscopy sessions allow participants to observe compost organisms and soil biology, helping to make invisible processes visible and fostering curiosity and care for living systems.
Informational displays & short talks
Pop-up displays, demonstrations, or short, conversational presentations on composting methods, soil health, food waste reduction, and related ecological topics.
Community knowledge sharing
Space for participants to share experiences, ask questions, and learn from one another, recognizing composting as both a practical skill and a community practice.
